Community Foundation Silicon Valley Named 2002 Outstanding Foundation
Alexandria, VA - Community Foundation Silicon Valley (CFSV) of San Jose,
Calif., has been named the 2002 Outstanding Foundation by the Association
of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the largest association of charitable
fundraisers in the world.
The Outstanding Foundation Award is one of AFPs highest honors and is
given to the foundation that demonstrates exemplary commitment to philanthropy
through financial support and through encouragement and motivation of others
to take leadership roles in the charitable sector. The award is given annually
at AFPs International Conference on Fundraising.
It is a great honor for Community Foundation Silicon Valley to be recognized
as 2002 Outstanding Foundation, said Peter Hero, president of CFSV.
This is the first time in AFPs history that a Community Foundation
has received this honor. We are delighted to represent the more than 660 global
community foundations that each work to create stronger communities and to
promote philanthropy.
Raising more than $254 million in fiscal year 2000-2001, CFSV currently manages
more than 650 funds, including donor-advised, corporate-advised, special project,
and endowment funds, making it one of the largest community foundations in
the world. Its commitment to its community and the charitable sector is also
noteworthy.
In January 2001, after a disastrous earthquake rocked Gujarat, India, CFSV
assisted more than 25 local organizations that together raised more than $10
million in pledges, contributions, and medical supply donations for the relief
efforts. CFSV managed the United Community Appeal for India Fund, which was
one of several places donors could direct their contributions for this effort.
When the United Way Silicon Valley faced a funding crisis in 1999, CFSV established
a separate fund for the $14 million that was necessary to support the recipient
organizations for the following year.
Being located in Silicon Valley, CFSV has made one of its major goals to encourage
young business and technology leaders to invest in the infrastructure and
good works of nonprofit organizations. The Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund
engages these donors in charity operations and management and prepares them
for a life of philanthropic involvement. The Fund gave more than $450,000
and leveraged an additional $300,000 in local grants.
CFSV was the first organization to accept pre-IPO gifts of stock for philanthropy.
In 2001, it worked with 13 global executives to set up their giving programs,
train their employees to be strategic grant makers and engage their executives
in philanthropy. CFSV is also a leader in producing research of vital importance
to nonprofits and donors. Some of the publications CFSV has been involved
with include: Giving Back the Silicon Valley Way; The Nonprofit Benchmark
Study; and The Social Capital Community Benchmark Study.
Through their grants, totaling almost $1 million per week, the Community
Foundation Silicon Valley has helped hundreds of local area nonprofits provide
invaluable service to the community, said Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE,
CAE, AFPs President and CEO. AFP is also pleased to recognize
an organization that is also a leader in producing research of vital importance
to nonprofits and donors.
CFSV was nominated by the AFP California, Silicon Valley Chapter, and will
be honored at the AFP Awards Banquet on April 16. Debra Engel, Board Chair,
will accept the award chair on behalf of CFSVs Board and staff. More
than 4,000 fundraising professionals are expected to attend the Conference,
the largest gathering of fundraisers in the world.
