Skoll World Forum 2011: Archbishop Desmond Tutu Honored by Skoll Foundation as Global Treasure to the WorldMarch 31, 2011 by Eddie Scher
“Human beings are made for goodness. The ones that are held in high regard are not militarily powerful, nor even economically prosperous. They have a commitment to try and make the world a better place.” - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond M. Tutu, Chair, The Elders
The Skoll Foundation is truly honored to recognize Archbishop Emeritus Desmond M. Tutu as a global treasure to the world. He is a teacher, a theologian and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate — a shining light whose singular commitment to creative nonviolence has bent the arc of 20th century history toward justice. His defiance in the face of extreme adversity demonstrates a rare courage and extraordinary humanity that comes from a place of true love and compassion. He is a builder who helped free and then heal a divided nation.
Today, as Chair of The Elders, he remains a leading global voice for peace, justice and reconciliation. The Archbishop’s steadfast faith in human goodness is an inspiration to all who strive to create a sustainable world of peace and prosperity.
The Global Treasure award is being presented to Archbishop Tutu on Thursday, March 31, 2011, in a ceremony during the Skoll World Forum that will also introduce the 2011 winners of the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship.
